Rare Candy is revolutionizing the $25 billion trading-card industry as the “friendly local game shop” in the palm of your hands. Collectors use our AI-powered card scanner, open their favorite chase cards with Instapacks, and keep track of them with our data-rich collection tools which showcases Pokémon, MTG, Lorcana, One Piece, and more. We've hit 10x revenue growth over the last 6 months, the business is profitable, and we're building the team to take this from a great product to a category-defining one.

THE ROLE

We’re hiring a mid-level Web Engineer to build the web experiences collectors use to discover products, manage their collections, shop drops, and open Instapacks.

You’ll work closely with the CTO and product, design, and engineering teams to take features from idea to production. This is a hands-on product engineering role for someone comfortable building modern web applications who can own a feature, make thoughtful technical decisions, and deliver a polished experience.

You won’t be handed endless tickets in a giant backlog. You’ll help shape solutions, work through tradeoffs, and take responsibility for how your features perform once they’re in collectors’ hands.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE

First 30 days: You get the web app running locally, understand the core product flows and frontend architecture, and ship your first meaningful improvements.

By day 90: You’re independently delivering well-scoped web features. You can clarify requirements, collaborate with design and backend engineers, implement the experience, test it, and verify it in production.

By the end of year one: You own important areas of the web product. You’ve shipped meaningful improvements to the collector experience, raised the bar for performance and usability, and made the codebase easier for the team to build on.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Build and improve responsive web experiences across Rare Candy’s collector-facing product.

- Develop maintainable interfaces using React, TypeScript, and modern web tooling.

- Integrate with GraphQL APIs and collaborate with backend engineers on data requirements and API contracts.

- Own features from technical planning through implementation, testing, rollout, and follow-up improvements.

- Build reusable components and consistent interaction patterns that help the team ship faster.

- Make experiences work well across devices and browsers, with attention to accessibility, loading states, error handling, and performance.

- Investigate production bugs and address the underlying causes.

- Work closely with product and design to balance user needs, technical constraints, and delivery timelines.

- Contribute thoughtful code reviews and communicate clearly about progress, tradeoffs, and blockers.

A DAY IN YOUR LIFE AT RARE CANDY

You start the morning reviewing feedback on a recently shipped feature and checking how it’s performing for collectors.

Mid-morning, you’re working with design and a backend engineer to scope a new collection browsing experience, thinking through the API, filtering behavior, and mobile layout.

After lunch, you’re building the interface, connecting it to live data, and handling loading, empty, and error states. You catch a slow interaction and track it down before opening your PR.

Later in the day, you’re in a product discussion about an upcoming drop, bringing both your web engineering perspective and your own TCG fluency to the conversation.

You close the day by reviewing a teammate’s code and sharing your own PR with a clear summary, screenshots, and testing notes.

YOU MIGHT BE A FIT IF

- You have around 3–5 years of web engineering experience and have shipped meaningful features in production.

- You’re comfortable building with React and TypeScript and have strong fundamentals in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

- You can take a feature from a product brief or design through implementation and release without needing every step spelled out.

- You’ve worked with GraphQL or REST APIs and understand data fetching, caching, and client-side state management.

- You know how to build responsive, accessible interfaces and care about the details that make a web experience feel good.

- You can reason through component design, rendering behavior, and performance tradeoffs without overcomplicating the solution.

- You write useful tests and know how to debug issues across the browser, network requests, and API responses.

- You communicate technical tradeoffs clearly and work well with designers, product partners, and other engineers.

- You’re comfortable in a fast-moving startup where priorities can shift and you’re expected to help find the path forward.

- You know the trading-card or collector world. You collect, play, rip packs, follow the market, or have real fluency in a similar collectible space.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO THRIVE HERE

You’re expected to take ownership of your role at Rare Candy and drive your own growth. That doesn’t mean doing it alone. You’ll have support, context, and mentorship along the way.

The systems are still evolving, the team is small, and your work will matter immediately. You'll need to be curious, detail-oriented, and comfortable learning by doing.
