Role Overview

Coupang Pay is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to help safeguard our customers and payment ecosystem from fraud, account takeover, payment abuse, and emerging financial crime threats. This is a high-impact role for a strategic, data-driven fraud owner who is passionate about solving complex risk challenges and delivering measurable business impact. The ideal candidate combines deep fraud expertise, analytical rigor, intellectual curiosity, and a builder's mindset to develop scalable, technology-driven solutions with minimal customer friction. Key Responsibilities

• Lead Coupang Pay's fraud strategy by identifying emerging risks and developing scalable prevention and detection solutions across the payment lifecycle.

• Design, implement, and optimize fraud controls, decisioning strategies, and risk policies to reduce fraud losses while maximizing payment approval rates and customer experience.

• Analyze large-scale transaction, behavioral, and fraud datasets to identify emerging attack patterns, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for risk mitigation.

• Partner with Product, Engineering, Data Science, Fraud Operations, and Compliance teams to translate insights into production-ready rules, models, and fraud prevention capabilities.

• Evaluate and leverage machine learning, AI, graph analytics, and other advanced technologies to enhance fraud detection, investigation, and operational efficiency.

• Assess fraud risks associated with new products, payment methods, and business initiatives, and recommend appropriate risk controls.

• Monitor fraud performance metrics and key business outcomes, driving continuous improvements through experimentation, analysis, and data-driven decision making.

• Lead root-cause analyses of significant fraud incidents and provide strategic recommendations to strengthen Coupang Pay's fraud defenses.

• Communicate fraud trends, risks, business impacts, and strategic priorities to leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience in fraud strategy, fraud risk management, fraud analytics, payments risk, or related fields.

• Experience leading fraud strategy initiatives in e-commerce, payments, fintech, card, or financial services environments.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical skills, with the ability to leverage large- scale data, machine learning, and real-time decisioning systems to develop scalable fraud prevention solutions and drive business impact.

• Experience developing, implementing, and optimizing fraud prevention and detection strategies.

• Proven ability to influence stakeholders and drive cross-functional initiatives across Product, Engineering, Data Science, Fraud Operations, and Compliance organizations.

• Professional proficiency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative field; advanced degree preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience applying advanced fraud techniques, including graph analytics, device intelligence, behavioral analytics, identity risk assessment, account takeover detection, AI/LLMs, or intelligent automation.

• Hands-on experience with data analysis and programming tools such as Python, SQL, HIVE, or similar large-scale analytics platforms.

• Proven track record of optimizing fraud prevention strategies while balancing fraud loss, payment approval rates, customer experience, and business growth objectives.

• Experience building and scaling fraud capabilities in large, high-growth, data-driven organizations.

• Experience with card payments, issuer/acquirer risk management, chargeback management, or broader payment fraud ecosystems.
