Position: Risk Underwriter, Credit Insurance Underwriting (level 16 - 18) Employment Type: Permanent Compensation Details: Salaries are based on qualifications and experience, and typically range as set out below. EDC also offers a performance-based incentive. Underwriter level 15: $65,172 - $86,898 Underwriter level 16: $74,297 - $99,063 Underwriter level 17: $84,698 – $112,931 Underwriter level 18: $96,557 - $128,743 This competition will be used to fill current vacancies from level 16 to 18. It will also be used to establish a pool of qualified candidates for anticipated vacancies at level 15. Results may be used to staff vacancies arising over the next 12 months. Location: Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment, with a current requirement of two days per week increasing to three days per week in September 2026 (subject to change). This role can be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax, or Vancouver. Team Overview: EDC’s Credit Insurance Underwriting (CIU) Team assists Canadian companies go, grow and succeed internationally. Working in close collaboration with both internal and external partners, CIU facilitates international trade by helping our customers protect themselves against the risk of non-payment from foreign companies. Risk Underwriting is part of the CIU Team and performs credit risk assessments on companies worldwide who enter into supply agreements with our customers. Risk Underwriting also manages the above for our domestic credit insurance partner(s) as their Agent for our joint book of business. Tens of thousands of requests are treated every year, in part manually and a growing proportion with the support of various models, RPAs and digital workers. What you will be doing: Conducts due diligence and necessary analysis to establish the creditworthiness and risk level of the buyer and/or transactions based on the financial review of the buyer as well as the assessment of other factors such as country economic conditions, payment terms etc. Assesses and evaluates requests for new credit. Analyses and comments on sector, market and portfolio developments. Consistently adheres to acceptable credit standards to ensure appropriate documentation, credit analysis and recommended decisions. Prepares credit material and presents recommendations to appropriate DOA. Proactively shares knowledge to provide superior service to the Business Teams, internal partners, and customers. Learns about general credit insurance underwriting practices. Ensures discipline around data integrity. Able to generate new continuous improvement ideas for EDC by working closely with colleagues, customers, and key intermediaries. Contributes to ad hoc projects related to process and other improvements. Depending on your level, manage files of increasing complexity, autonomy, and visibility—from supporting routine transactions with guidance at levels 15, to independently handling standard to moderately complex work at level 16 and 17, to leading and advising on more complex or irregular transactions at level 18. What we are looking for: Undergraduate Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or other related disciplines. Experience in credit risk management and international trade or related fields as follows: Underwriter 15: Typically 2+ years of relevant experience. You bring experience managing routine underwriting or risk-related work with growing independence and can apply established frameworks to common transaction scenarios. Underwriter 16: Typically 2–5 years of relevant experience. You can independently manage routine to moderately complex files, contribute to more complex analyses with guidance, and communicate recommendations clearly. Underwriter 17: Typically 5+ years of relevant experience. You bring strong underwriting experience handling increasingly complex transactions, with the judgment and confidence to lead analyses, navigate challenge, and defend recommendations in broader forums.
