Job Description
The group of Prof Loh Kian Ping is seeking a highly motivated and skilled experimentalist to join our quantum materials research group. The project centers on high-resolution Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/STS) to visualize and analyze quasiparticle interference (QPI) patterns in novel quantum materials (such as topological semimetals, unconventional superconductors, or correlated electron systems).
The successful candidate will run ultra-high vacuum (UHV) low-temperature STM systems, measure local density of states (LDOS), perform Fourier-transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS), and map out exotic surface and bulk electronic states.
Key Responsibilities
• STM/STS Operations: Maintain and operate low-temperature UHV scanning tunneling microscopes. Perform in situ sample cleavage, low-temperature measurements (4K), and high-stability dI/dV spectroscopic mapping.
• QPI Data Analysis: Extract scattering vectors, analyze standing wave patterns, and interpret phase coherence or symmetry-breaking properties from QPI data.
• Collaboration: Work alongside theory groups to model electronic structures, Fermi surface topologies, and impurity scattering selection rules.
• Dissemination: Write peer-reviewed research papers and present findings at international physics conferences.
Requirements & Qualifications
• Education: Ph.D. in Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, or a closely related discipline.
• Technical Skills: Hands-on experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems, cryogenic scanning probe microscopy, and low-noise electronic measurements.
• Research Track Record: Demonstrated experience in analyzing spectroscopic data, specifically dI/dV mapping and quasiparticle interference or Fourier transforms, having publications in the relevant area will be good.
• Soft Skills: Strong English communication skills, ability to work independently, and willingness to mentor junior graduate students.
