About this role

JAVA ENGINEERING LEAD – CUSTOMER COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT (ENGINEER II/III)
Brand, Marketing & Communications | Mutual of Omaha Information Services
Mutual of Omaha is expanding its Brand, Marketing & Communications (BMC) program to launch a newly approved, enterprise-wide Customer Communication Management (CCM) platform. This is not a backfill – it is a new role created to help build something from the ground up. The CCM platform will give our customers control over how they receive information from Mutual of Omaha, moving statements and benefit communications that were traditionally printed and mailed to secure digital delivery. The result: a better customer experience and meaningful cost savings for the company.
As the Engineering Lead for the CCM platform, you will set the technical direction and engineering standards across a set of interconnected applications – spanning greenfield development, enterprise scaling of existing applications, and integration with vendor and internal systems. You will serve as a Solution Lead, starting with a newly formed discovery team and continuing as the platform expands into dedicated delivery teams.
This role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering (approximately 40–50% coding). The ideal candidate is an experienced solution or engineering lead who enjoys building new platforms, keeps teams honest on engineering practices, and is energized by shaping a multi-year transformation of how Mutual of Omaha communicates with its customers.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU:

• Estimated Salary:

• Engineer II - $125,000 - $140,000, plus annual bonus opportunity

• Engineer III - $150,000 - $163,000, plus annual bonus opportunity

•
Benefits and Perks: 401(k) plan with a 2% company contribution and 6% company match

•
Time Off: Up to 15 days of vacation annually, plus 11 paid holidays including 2 floating holidays

•
Work Arrangement: Remote, with occasional in-person team events (approximately once per year for 3–4 days)

•
Eligibility: Applicants must not now, nor in the future, require employment sponsorship

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

•
Platform Engineering Leadership: Serve as the overall engineering lead for the CCM platform, establishing and enforcing engineering standards, patterns, and practices across interconnected applications to ensure they are scalable, maintainable, and ready for future growth.

•
Solution Leadership: Act as Solution Lead for the CCM discovery team and future delivery teams, coordinating closely with other Solution Leads to align designs, dependencies, and delivery across the program.

•
Hands-On Development: Spend roughly 40–50% of your time coding – building greenfield applications and enhancing and scaling existing applications using Java, MuleSoft, and AWS.

•
Discovery & Build-vs-Buy Analysis: Assess the capabilities and gaps of existing applications, estimate the effort to make them enterprise-ready, and evaluate vendor solutions to recommend where to build versus buy. Findings will directly shape the 2027 critical path plan.

•
Platform Capabilities: Help design and deliver core CCM capabilities, including a decision engine, a customer consent and preference center, workflow management, and analytics tracking – along with integrations to Salesforce and third-party tools.

•
Mentorship & Collaboration: Mentor and guide engineers on the team and partner with QA, business analysts, and technical leadership within a SAFe Agile environment (three-week sprints, quarterly PI planning).

•
AI-Enabled Engineering: Champion the use of AI tools and agents to accelerate development, improve code quality, and increase team productivity.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience as a Solution Lead, Engineering Lead, or Technical Lead.

• Strong hands-on experience with Java and AWS cloud services.

• Experience with MuleSoft or similar integration platforms, including API design and system-to-system integration.

• Proven track record of building applications from scratch and taking them from concept to production.

• Experience scaling and modernizing existing applications for enterprise-wide use.

• Ability to define and uphold engineering standards across multiple applications and teams.

• Experience with CI/CD practices and tooling, including GitHub.

• Experience leading and mentoring other engineers.

• Comfortable working in SAFe Agile environments and contributing to PI planning within Agile Release Trains (ART).

• Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate across teams and stakeholders.

PREFERRED:

• Experience with Vue.js.

• Experience with TypeScript and AWS CDK.

• Experience or strong interest in AI-assisted engineering, including using AI agents in the development process.

• Experience with Salesforce integrations.

• Experience with customer communication management, digital document delivery, or consent and preference management solutions.

• Experience evaluating and implementing vendor solutions.

• Insurance or financial services industry experience.
