About this role

Position Summary
The Chief API Officer (CAPIO) is responsible for establishing and executing the organization's Application Programming Interface (API) strategy, governance, and ecosystem development initiatives. This executive leads API product management, developer experience, platform integration, Open Banking/Open Finance initiatives, API monetization, security, and digital ecosystem expansion. The role serves as the bridge between business strategy and technology innovation, ensuring APIs become strategic assets that drive revenue, partnerships, customer engagement, and digital transformation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership

Develop and execute the enterprise-wide API strategy aligned with business objectives.

Establish APIs as strategic products and revenue-generating assets.

Drive API-first and platform-centric business models across the organization.

Identify opportunities for ecosystem expansion through API enablement.

Advise executive leadership and the Board on API innovation and digital ecosystem trends.

API Product Management

Oversee the API lifecycle from design and development to deployment and retirement.

Define API product roadmaps and service portfolios.

Ensure APIs meet customer, developer, and partner requirements.

Drive adoption of API product management best practices.

Establish service-level agreements (SLAs) and performance standards.

API Governance & Architecture

Develop API governance frameworks, standards, and policies.

Establish enterprise API architecture and design principles.

Ensure consistency, scalability, and interoperability across API platforms.

Oversee API versioning, documentation, and lifecycle management.

Promote API reuse and enterprise integration strategies.

Developer Ecosystem & Partnerships

Build and manage developer communities and partner ecosystems.

Develop API onboarding programs and developer support initiatives.

Foster innovation through open APIs and third-party integrations.

Collaborate with external developers, fintechs, vendors, and strategic partners.

Lead developer experience (DX) improvements.

API Monetization & Commercial Strategy

Develop API monetization models and pricing strategies.

Create new revenue streams through API products and services.

Identify commercial partnership opportunities leveraging APIs.

Monitor API usage, consumption trends, and profitability.

Support marketplace and ecosystem expansion strategies.

Open Banking & Open Finance Leadership

Lead Open Banking, Open Finance, and Embedded Finance API initiatives.

Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Drive innovation through financial data-sharing ecosystems.

Develop strategic API partnerships with financial institutions and fintech organizations.

Security, Risk & Compliance

Ensure API security and data protection standards are maintained.

Oversee authentication, authorization, and access management frameworks.

Implement API cybersecurity best practices.

Ensure compliance with privacy regulations, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Manage operational, security, and third-party risks.

Technology & Innovation

Drive adoption of modern API technologies and integration platforms.

Oversee API gateways, management platforms, and developer portals.

Support cloud-native architectures and microservices transformation.

Evaluate emerging technologies including AI, blockchain, and event-driven architectures.

Promote continuous innovation and automation.

Data & Analytics

Monitor API performance and business outcomes.

Establish API analytics and reporting frameworks.

Utilize data insights to optimize API products and customer experiences.

Measure ecosystem growth and API adoption metrics.

Team Leadership

Build and lead high-performing API product, engineering, architecture, and developer relations teams.

Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and customer-centricity.

Develop future leaders and technical experts within the API organization.

Required Qualifications
Education

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.

MBA or Master's degree preferred.

Experience

12+ years of leadership experience in API management, enterprise architecture, digital platforms, software engineering, fintech, or technology sectors.

Proven experience developing and managing enterprise API ecosystems.

Strong background in Open Banking, Open Finance, platform strategies, or digital transformation initiatives.

Experience leading large-scale integration and developer ecosystem programs.
